Mountain First Cafe

Blaxland is not a place that encourages a stop off on the trek up to the Blue Mountains. Actually, it’s a blink-and-miss-it type of place and the first time I have ever made a point of stopping for a closer inspection rather than a glimpse while passing through. There are only a handful of cafes, and I find one that serves scones. Upon entering Mountain First Cafe, my first impressions is of a Country Women’s Association (CWA) Tea Room, simply furnished and filled with chattering ladies. Actually, I can’t but help eavesdrop on some of the conversations and wonder what I’ll be talking about with friends in twenty odd years time. The menu is simple hearty fare, and I settle in to a seat by the window and watch the semi-trailers rumble by on the Great Western Highway. I have high expectations of the scones, and I think, if fresh, they would have placed in a CWA competition, but today they just don’t seem that fresh. Whether they are heated up too much, I don’t know, but their potential is lost somehow. The jam is quite ordinary and there’s barely enough for one scone, but I don’t feel like asking for more and the cream is fresh but too light and airy for me. But overall, it’s an authentic place minus the bells and whistles of swankier establishments.
